Why an ASHP needs a different kind of service

An air source heat pump has more moving parts working together than a gas boiler — an outdoor unit exposed to the weather, a refrigerant circuit, electronic controls, and usually a hot water cylinder working alongside it. A service is not just a five-minute check; it covers the electrical, mechanical and control sides of the system so that nothing is quietly losing efficiency without you noticing on the bill.

What a service includes

• Outdoor unit inspection — clearing debris, checking the coil is clean and airflow is not restricted
• Condensate drainage checked and cleared
• Electrical connections and isolators inspected
• System pressure and flow checked against the manufacturer's figures
• Controls, programmer and any zone valves tested
• Defrost cycle checked so the unit is not working harder than it needs to in cold weather
• Filters cleaned or replaced where fitted
• Written report so you can see how the system is performing year on year

Where the job involves the sealed refrigerant circuit itself, that work is carried out only by an engineer holding the right F-Gas qualification for the refrigerant category — we will confirm this with you at booking if your system needs it.

Why servicing matters more with an ASHP, not less

An air source heat pump is usually the single biggest-ticket heating system in a home, and running costs are far more sensitive to small faults than a gas boiler's are — a coil half-blocked with leaves, or a system running a few degrees below its design flow temperature, shows up directly as a higher electricity bill rather than an obvious symptom. Annual servicing is also frequently a condition of the manufacturer's warranty and any government incentive scheme the installation was registered under, so skipping it can be an expensive false economy.

Emergency repair — from £150

£150 covers the first hour of diagnosis and labour if your ASHP has stopped heating, is showing a fault code, has iced up and not defrosted, or will not start at all. Once we know what's wrong you get the full repair price, including any parts, before we carry on.

Common faults we see

• Outdoor unit iced up and not defrosting — often a fan, sensor or defrost-cycle fault rather than anything more serious
• System running but the house isn't warming up — usually a flow temperature or controls setting issue, sometimes simple to correct
• Fault code on the display — we read this against the manufacturer's diagnostics before touching anything
• Unit short-cycling or unusually noisy — can point to a refrigerant, airflow or electrical issue
• No power to the unit — isolator, fuse or wiring fault, checked before assuming anything more serious

Prices are estimates and may change after a site inspection. We cover Birmingham and 10 miles from B20 2JS as standard, extending to 50 miles for boiler installations. A travel charge may apply beyond 10 miles.
