Electric boilers and electric water heaters

An electric boiler heats your central heating and hot water the same way a gas boiler does, just using an electric element instead of a gas burner — no flue, no gas supply, and no combustion to worry about. An electric water heater is simpler again: it usually just heats water for taps, either as a small under-sink unit or a larger cylinder-style heater. Both are common where there is no mains gas connection, or where a property is too small or too awkward to run gas pipework into.

Servicing

Electric appliances don't need a Gas Safe check, but they still need looking after: element condition, thermostat and control accuracy, electrical connections, pressure relief and any scale build-up in hard water areas. An annual service is £120 on its own, or £90 if you book it alongside another boiler or cylinder service on the same visit — the same pricing structure as our unvented cylinder servicing.

Repairs

Same approach as our gas boiler repairs: £99 covers a full diagnosis and the first hour of labour, Monday to Friday between 8am and 5.30pm. You get the total repair price before we carry on, so there's no open-ended billing. Outside office hours — evenings, nights and weekends — call us and we'll give you an out-of-hours quote before anyone comes out.

Common faults

• No heat or hot water — often a failed element or thermostat
• Tripping the electrics — usually an element or wiring fault, needs checking before reset
• Reduced hot water flow — scale build-up, especially in hard water areas
• Leaking from the unit — pressure relief valve or a failed seal
• Inaccurate temperature — thermostat or control board fault

Electric water heater repairs

An electric water heater heats tap water only. It may be a small heater under or over a sink serving one or two taps, a larger unvented water heater serving a whole flat, or a cylinder heated by immersion heaters.

When one stops giving hot water, the usual causes are the heating element, its thermostat, a tripped overheat cut-out or the supply to it. Water dripping from the relief valve or its pipe means pressure or temperature is not being controlled, and should be looked at promptly. A heater that trips the electrics should be left switched off. A cause can only be confirmed by testing, so read this as a guide and not a diagnosis.

A repair visit is £99 in office hours (Mon–Fri 8am–5.30pm), which covers attendance, diagnosis and the first hour, and parts are priced before we fit them. A small under-sink heater can cost less to replace than to repair, and we will tell you when that is the case. Replacing an immersion heater in a cylinder is quoted after the diagnosis. Larger unvented water heaters come under the same G3 rules as an unvented cylinder, and our lead engineer holds that qualification. Thermal stores and the Gledhill PulsaCoil

Many Birmingham apartments, particularly in the city centre and the Jewellery Quarter, have no gas and no ordinary cylinder. Hot water comes from an electric thermal store such as the Gledhill PulsaCoil, which is a different appliance from an unvented cylinder. We repair them: a repair visit is £99 in office hours (Mon–Fri 8am–5.30pm), which covers attendance, diagnosis and the first hour. Installation

We supply and fit electric boilers and water heaters where mains gas isn't an option, or where it's simply the more sensible choice for the property — a small flat with modest hot water demand, an annexe, a workshop. We size the unit to the property rather than defaulting to the biggest one available, and quote after a proper survey.

Prices

Service prices are the price for the job as described; the £99 is a fixed charge for attendance, diagnosis and the first hour of a repair in office hours (Mon–Fri 8am–5.30pm), not the price of every job. Parts and further work are quoted and agreed before we carry on, out-of-hours work is quoted by phone before we set off, and installations are priced in writing after a free survey.
