Gledhill PulsaCoil and Thermal Store Repairs in Birmingham

Many Birmingham apartments, particularly in the city centre and the Jewellery Quarter, have no gas and get their hot water from an electric thermal store such as the Gledhill PulsaCoil. When one stops giving hot water, we find the cause and repair it. In office hours (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5.30pm) £99 covers the visit, the diagnosis and the first hour, and parts are priced before we fit them. We are an independent heating company, not Gledhill and not its service agent.

What a PulsaCoil is

A PulsaCoil is a thermal store. Immersion heaters heat a tank of water, usually overnight on a cheaper tariff, and that water stays in the tank. When you open a hot tap, cold mains water passes through a heat exchanger, picks up heat from the stored water and comes out hot at mains pressure. The water you wash in never sits in the tank.

That makes it a different appliance from an unvented cylinder such as a Megaflo, even though both are tall white units in a cupboard, and it needs a different approach to fault finding. It also has parts a cylinder does not have: a pump, a heat exchanger, sensors and a control board.

PulsaCoil faults and what usually causes them

A cause can only be confirmed by testing on site, so read this as a guide to what an engineer will check, not as a diagnosis.

No hot water at all

Either the store is cold, or it is hot and the heat is not reaching the tap. A cold store points to the immersion heaters, their thermostats, the supply or the timer. A hot store with cold taps points to the pump, a sensor or the control board. We have attended one PulsaCoil where the pump had failed and needed replacing, and another where the supply had tripped at the consumer unit and the unit ran normally once it was reset and tested.

Hot water that turns lukewarm quickly

Often only one of the immersion heaters is working, so the store never fully heats, or the overnight supply or timer is not switching on. A worn mixing valve can also limit the temperature at the tap.

A warning light or fault code

Later models show faults with lights or a code on the front panel. Photograph what it shows and send it to us, or tell us when you call.

The unit trips the electrics

Usually an immersion heater that is breaking down. Leave the unit switched off and have it tested.

Gurgling, or a low water level

If the water level in the store drops, the unit can become noisy and stop heating properly, and a leak may be the reason. Please do not open the casing or top it up yourself.

Parts we replace most

  • Immersion heaters and their thermostats
  • Pumps
  • Temperature sensors
  • Control boards
  • Mixing valves

Parts for older models are not always available. We check before we order anything, and we tell you if replacing the unit is the better route.

How the visit works, and what it costs

  1. Tell us what is happening. Call, send the form above, or WhatsApp a photo of the front of the unit. The model name is usually printed on it.
  2. We test before we replace anything. The supply, the immersion heaters, the pump, the sensors and the controls are tested, so the fault is found and not guessed.
  3. You get the price before the repair. In office hours £99 covers the visit, the diagnosis and the first hour. Parts and any further time are priced and agreed before we carry on.
  4. We repair and test. The hot water is run and checked at the tap before we leave.

Outside office hours the price is quoted by phone before we set off. There is no travel charge within 10 miles of B20 2JS.

Can a PulsaCoil be repaired, or should it be replaced?

In most cases it can be repaired: immersion heaters, pumps, sensors and control boards are all replaceable parts. Replacement is worth considering when the store itself is leaking, when parts for an old model can no longer be had, or when the unit has needed repair after repair.

When a store is beyond economic repair there are two routes: a like-for-like thermal store or, where the flat suits it, a conversion to an unvented cylinder. Unvented work needs the G3 qualification, which our lead engineer holds. Both are quoted in writing after a survey.

Tenants, landlords and managing agents

Most PulsaCoils are in rented or leasehold flats. If you are a tenant, speak to your landlord or managing agent first. We take bookings from tenants, landlords and agents: see our landlords page.

Who does the work

Synergy Gas & Plumbing is a family-run Birmingham business, trading since 2017 and led by Saeed Iqbal, an engineer with more than 20 years' experience, including ten years with British Gas (2006 to 2016). The company is Gas Safe registered, number 594385, and Saeed holds the G3 qualification for unvented hot water systems.

No gas is involved, so Gas Safe registration is not what qualifies anyone to repair a thermal store, and it is not an electrical qualification. We are an independent heating company: we are not approved or appointed by Gledhill. If testing shows that the fault is in the fixed wiring of the flat or in the consumer unit, and not in the unit itself, we will tell you, and that part is a job for a registered electrician.

Related jobs in Birmingham flats

We have not photographed a PulsaCoil repair for the site yet, so there is no PulsaCoil case study to show. These two are electric hot water and heating repairs in city flats.

What you can safely check before you call

  • Is the unit switched on at the wall, and has a breaker tripped in the consumer unit? If it trips again when you reset it, leave it off.
  • Is the overnight timer or boost control set?
  • What do the lights on the front show?

Please do not take the covers off yourself: these are mains electrical appliances holding very hot water.

PulsaCoil and thermal store repairs: common questions

Can a Gledhill PulsaCoil be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. Immersion heaters, thermostats, pumps, sensors and control boards are replaceable parts. Replacement is worth considering when the store itself is leaking, when parts for an old model are no longer available, or when the unit has needed repeated repairs. We test first and tell you which applies.

Why has my PulsaCoil got no hot water?

Either the store is cold or the heat is not reaching the tap. A cold store points to the immersion heaters, their thermostats, the supply or the timer. A hot store with cold taps points to the pump, a sensor or the control board. It takes testing to tell which, so it cannot be diagnosed over the phone.

How much does a PulsaCoil repair cost?

In office hours (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5.30pm) £99 covers the visit, the diagnosis and the first hour. Parts and any further time are priced and agreed before we carry on. Outside those hours, call us for a quote before we set off.

Is a PulsaCoil the same as an unvented cylinder?

No. A PulsaCoil is a thermal store: the water in its tank stays there and heats mains water as it passes through a heat exchanger. An unvented cylinder such as a Megaflo stores the hot water you actually use, under mains pressure. They have different parts and different faults.

Should I replace my PulsaCoil with an unvented cylinder?

Only if the flat suits it. A conversion needs a survey, and the work must be done by an engineer who holds the G3 qualification. A like-for-like thermal store is the other route. We quote for either in writing after a survey.

Are you Gledhill engineers?

No. We are an independent heating company. We repair PulsaCoils and other electric thermal stores, but we are not Gledhill and are not approved or appointed by them.

Do I need a Gas Safe engineer for a PulsaCoil?

No. There is no gas in a PulsaCoil, so Gas Safe registration does not apply, and it is not an electrical qualification either. Choose an engineer who repairs electric hot water systems.
