Electric Boiler Repairs in Birmingham
An electric boiler does the same job as a gas boiler, with heating elements where the burner would be: no gas and no flue. When it stops heating, trips the electrics, loses pressure or shows a warning light, we find the fault and repair it. In office hours (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5.30pm) £99 covers the visit, the diagnosis and the first hour, and parts are priced before we fit them. Outside those hours, call and we will quote before we set off.

Smell gas now? Do not use this form or wait for a reply. Call the National Gas Emergency Service free on 0800 111 999 (24 hours). If you are using a mobile, make the call from outside. Open doors and windows, do not switch electrics on or off, do not smoke or use naked flames, and turn the gas off at the meter if it is safe to do so, unless the meter is in a cellar or basement. Once the supply has been made safe, we can trace and repair the fault.
Many flats in Birmingham have no gas supply, and people use the words "electric boiler" for three different appliances. The repair is different for each.
An electric central heating boiler. A wall-hung unit that heats the water in your radiators, and often a hot water cylinder as well. This page is about these.
A thermal store such as a Gledhill PulsaCoil. A tall white unit that gives hot water at mains pressure. See PulsaCoil and thermal store repairs.
Tell us the make and model when you call, so we can check what parts are available before we come out.
Electric boiler faults and what usually causes them
A cause can only be confirmed by testing on site, so read this as a guide to what an engineer will check, not as a diagnosis.
No heating or hot water
The usual causes are a failed heating element, a thermostat or temperature sensor, the control board, the pump, or the controls that tell the boiler to run: the programmer or the room thermostat. Low system pressure will also stop many electric boilers.
The boiler trips the electrics
A breaker that trips when the boiler heats usually points to a failing element or a wiring fault inside the appliance. Leave the boiler switched off. The breaker is doing its job, and resetting it again and again is not safe.
An overheat light or lockout
An overheat warning means the water is not carrying the heat away fast enough: low pressure, air in the system, a pump that has stopped or a blocked filter. In the Jewellery Quarter a Potterton Gold with its overheat light flashing turned out to be low on pressure, with a loose automatic air vent that leaked as soon as the pressure came back up.
The pressure keeps dropping
Water is leaving the system somewhere: a radiator valve, the pressure relief valve, an automatic air vent or the expansion vessel. Topping up without finding the leak only delays the next breakdown.
Radiators lukewarm, or some staying cold
One or more elements may have failed, so the boiler is running at part power, or the system may have sludge, air or a sticking valve. We test the boiler before blaming the radiators.
Parts that commonly need replacing
Heating elements
Thermostats, overheat cut-outs and temperature sensors
Control boards, relays and contactors
Pumps
Pressure relief valves, automatic air vents and expansion vessels
Programmers and room thermostats
Parts for older or discontinued electric boilers can be hard to get. We check availability and price before we order anything, and we tell you if replacing the boiler is the more sensible route.
How the visit works, and what it costs
Tell us what is happening. Call, send the form above, or WhatsApp a photo of the boiler and any lights or codes it is showing.
We test before we replace anything. The boiler is isolated, then the elements, thermostats, pump and controls are tested and the system pressure checked, so the fault is found and not guessed.
You get the price before the repair. In office hours £99 covers the visit, the diagnosis and the first hour. Parts and any further time are priced and agreed before we carry on.
We repair and test. The heating is run and checked before we leave.
Outside office hours the price is quoted by phone before we set off. There is no travel charge within 10 miles of B20 2JS.
Can an electric boiler be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Usually it can be repaired. Elements, thermostats, pumps and valves are replaceable parts, and a pressure fault is often a small leak somewhere on the system and not the boiler at all. Replacement becomes the better option when the control board or elements are no longer made, when the body of the boiler is leaking, or when the repair would cost a large part of the price of a new one.
If testing leads there, we survey and quote in writing. Servicing and new electric boilers are covered on our electric boiler and water heater page.
Who does the work, and what Gas Safe does not cover
Synergy Gas & Plumbing is a family-run Birmingham business, trading since 2017 and led by Saeed Iqbal, an engineer with more than 20 years' experience, including ten years with British Gas (2006 to 2016). The company is Gas Safe registered, number 594385, and Saeed holds the G3 qualification for unvented hot water systems.
An electric boiler has no gas in it. Gas Safe registration is therefore not what qualifies anyone to repair one, and it is not an electrical qualification. What matters is an engineer who understands wet heating systems and works safely on mains-voltage appliances. We repair the boiler and the heating system it serves. If testing shows that the fault is in the fixed wiring of the flat or in the consumer unit, and not in the boiler, we will tell you, and that part is a job for a registered electrician.

What does the pressure gauge read? Tell us when you call.
Has a breaker tripped? If it trips again when you reset it, leave it off.
Please do not take the cover off the boiler. There are mains-voltage terminals inside.

What it costs
Updated Sept 2026
Diagnosis + first hour £99
£99 covers diagnosis and the first hour of a repair in office hours (Mon–Fri 8am–5.30pm). Parts and further work are quoted first. Annual service £120 (£90 bundled with another service).
No travel charge within 10 miles of B20 2JS. Further out, £2 per mile may apply — always agreed before anything is booked.
Usually, yes. Heating elements, thermostats, sensors, pumps, valves and control boards can all be replaced. Whether it is worth doing depends on the age of the boiler and whether the parts are still made. We test first and give you the price of the repair before going ahead.
Why has my electric boiler stopped working?
The common causes are a failed element, thermostat or sensor, the control board, the pump, low system pressure, or the programmer or room thermostat not calling for heat. It takes testing to tell which. If the boiler trips the electrics, leave it switched off.
How much does an electric boiler repair cost?
In office hours (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5.30pm) £99 covers the visit, the diagnosis and the first hour. Parts and any further time are priced and agreed before we carry on. Outside those hours, call us for a quote before we set off.
Why does my electric boiler keep tripping the fuse box?
Usually a heating element that is breaking down, or a wiring fault inside the boiler. Do not keep resetting it. Leave the boiler off and have it tested.
Do I need a Gas Safe engineer for an electric boiler?
No. There is no gas, so Gas Safe registration does not apply, and it is not an electrical qualification either. Choose an engineer who repairs electric heating as well as gas.
Does an electric boiler need servicing?
Yes. An annual check of the elements, thermostats, electrical connections, pressure relief valve and expansion vessel catches most faults early. A service is £120, or £90 when it is booked with another boiler or cylinder service on the same visit.
Is the white tank in my flat an electric boiler?
Not always. A tall white unit that only heats tap water is usually an unvented cylinder or a thermal store such as a Gledhill PulsaCoil, and each is repaired differently. Send us a photo and we will tell you which you have.
