Who does what

There is a division that catches people out. Cadent and the National Gas Emergency Service deal with the supply up to and including your meter, and they will isolate and cap to make you safe. Everything after the meter — the pipework in your walls, floors and under the units, and the appliances themselves — is yours, and needs a Gas Safe registered engineer. That is the point we come in.

How we find it

1. Tightness test. We pressurise the installation at the meter and watch for a drop. This confirms whether there is a leak and how big it is.
2. Sectional isolation. We isolate appliances and sections of pipework in turn to narrow it down without lifting every floorboard.
3. Location. Electronic gas detection and leak detection fluid pin down the exact joint or run.
4. Repair. Remake the joint or replace the section, retest, and issue documentation.

Where leaks usually are

In older Birmingham housing stock the recurring culprits are compression joints behind cookers, corroded steel pipe under solid floors in pre-war terraces, redundant capped-off supplies to removed gas fires, and meter unions disturbed by other trades. Newer builds are more often a badly made joint on a hob or a boiler installed by someone in a hurry.

A recent example from Edgbaston: Cadent capped a customer's supply after a 20 mbar drop on the internal pipework. We traced the leak to the old steel gas pipe, capped it off, kept the supply to the boiler and had the heating back the same day after a clean tightness test. Read the case study.

Carbon monoxide is a separate risk

A gas leak you can smell. Carbon monoxide you cannot — no smell, no colour, no taste. It comes from appliances burning incompletely, not from leaking pipework.

Signs an appliance may be producing carbon monoxide

• A lazy yellow or orange flame where it should be crisp and blue
• Black, sooty marks or yellow-brown staining on or around the appliance
• A pilot light that keeps blowing out
• More condensation than usual on the inside of windows in the room

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning

Headache is the most common. Also dizziness, feeling or being sick, tiredness and confusion, stomach pain, and shortness of breath. It can feel like flu but without a high temperature. The pattern that gives it away: symptoms ease when you leave the property and come back when you return.

If you suspect carbon monoxide: switch off the appliance, shut off the gas at the meter if it is safe to do so, open doors and windows, get everyone out, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Then get medical help — see a doctor or call 111, and call 999 if anyone has collapsed or lost consciousness. Do not use the appliance again until a Gas Safe registered engineer has checked it. The £99 is a fixed charge for attendance, diagnosis and the first hour in office hours (Mon–Fri 8am–5.30pm); it is not the price of every job. Pipework repairs and further work are quoted and agreed before we carry on, out-of-hours work is quoted by phone before we set off, and the capping price is the price for the job as described.
