A power flush costs £550 for a system of up to 10 radiators. It clears magnetite sludge and scale from radiators, pipework and the boiler heat exchanger using a pumped flushing machine and chemicals. You need one if radiators are cold at the bottom, the boiler is noisy or kettling, or you are fitting a new boiler onto old pipework.

Power flushing is oversold in this trade. Here are the honest signs that you do need one:
And when you probably do not: one cold radiator (that is usually balancing or a stuck TRV pin), a radiator cold at the top (that is air — bleed it), or a system that a chemical clean and a new magnetic filter would sort for a third of the price. We will tell you which camp you are in.
A flushing machine is connected to the system and pushes water through at high volume but low pressure, reversing direction to shift debris that a normal circulation would never dislodge. Cleaning chemicals and a sludge remover go in, each radiator is isolated and worked individually, agitation is applied to stubborn ones, and the system is dumped and refilled until the water runs clear. Finally the system is dosed with corrosion inhibitor.
Allow most of a day for an average three-bed house. The system will be off during that time.
A power flush cleans what is already there; a magnetic filter stops it coming back. We supply and fit one for £320, and it is the single best £320 you can spend on a heating system. Every new boiler we install includes one as standard.
Manufacturers require the system to be cleaned to BS 7593 standards when a new boiler goes in. If your old system is heavily contaminated and we install without cleaning it, your warranty claim can be refused later. This is why we sometimes insist on a flush before an installation — not as an upsell, but because the alternative is you carrying the risk.

Most of a working day for a typical three-bedroom house. Badly contaminated systems can take longer.
Usually not. A single cold radiator is more often a stuck thermostatic valve pin or a balancing issue, both far cheaper to fix. We check that first.
A well-inhibited system with a magnetic filter should not need flushing again for many years. Systems with no inhibitor and no filter tend to need attention every 5–8 years.
On very old systems with corroded steel pipe, flushing can occasionally reveal an existing weak point. We assess the system's condition first and will tell you if a gentler chemical clean is the safer option.
