Jewellery Quarter, Saturday emergency: a Potterton Gold electric boiler on overheat, low pressure and a loose air vent, sorted on one visit
An out-of-hours call on a Saturday. The overheat light was flashing when we arrived. We topped up the pressure, found and tightened a loose automatic air vent that started leaking, and tested the heating.
An out-of-hours emergency on a Saturday in the Jewellery Quarter. The customer has a Potterton Gold electric boiler, and when we arrived its overheat light was flashing. The system pressure was low, so we topped it up. As the pressure came up, a leak sprang from the automatic air vent, the small valve that lets trapped air out of the heating system. It was loose. We tightened it, checked it was dry, and tested the heating. It was all working again before we left.

Smell gas now? Do not use this form or wait for a reply. Call the National Gas Emergency Service free on 0800 111 999 (24 hours). If you are using a mobile, make the call from outside. Open doors and windows, do not switch electrics on or off, do not smoke or use naked flames, and turn the gas off at the meter if it is safe to do so, unless the meter is in a cellar or basement. Once the supply has been made safe, we can trace and repair the fault.

The call
The call came in on a Saturday, out of hours, from a customer in the Jewellery Quarter. Their heating comes from a Potterton Gold, a wall-hung electric boiler with no gas and no flue, and when we arrived its overheat light was flashing.
What we found
The system pressure was low. Low pressure means less water moving through the boiler to carry the heat away, which is a common reason for an overheat warning. We topped the pressure up, and as it came up a leak sprang from the automatic air vent, the small valve that lets trapped air out of the heating system. It had worked loose.
The fix
We tightened the air vent and checked it was dry. With the pressure back where it should be, we tested the heating through its operation, and everything was working again before we left. A loose vent like this one is also a likely route for the pressure to drop in the first place, which is why we look for a leak whenever a system needs topping up.
Out of hours, including weekends, we quote the price on the phone before we set off. In office hours an electric boiler repair is £99, covering diagnosis and the first hour, with parts quoted before we fit them. Details are on our 24/7 emergency page and our price list.
Common questions
Why is the overheat light flashing on my electric boiler?
It means the boiler's overheat protection has been triggered. Low system pressure is a common cause, because there is not enough water moving through the boiler to carry the heat away. Do not keep resetting it. Check the pressure gauge if you have one, and call an engineer to find out why it happened.
What is an automatic air vent?
It is a small valve, usually on top of the boiler or the pipework, that lets air out of the heating system so it does not collect and stop the water circulating. If one works loose or its seal fails, it can leak water instead of air, especially once the pressure is brought back up.
Do you repair electric boilers?
Yes, as well as gas boilers. In office hours a repair is £99 for diagnosis and the first hour, with parts quoted before we fit them. Out of hours, including weekends, we quote the price on the phone before we set off.
Do you come out at weekends?
Yes. Our emergency line runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. This job was a Saturday callout.

A late-night call about a leak. We traced it to the flow adapter on the boiler's right-hand manifold and, with the part on the van, fixed it that night instead of just turning the water off.
The boiler was showing an H09 fault. We diagnosed a faulty circuit board and, with the board on the van, had the customer back up and running on the same visit.
A routine Complete service that found dark system water and no inhibitor. The customer was shown the water, agreed to the fix, and the system was dosed before we left. A five-star review followed the same day.
