Two checks before you pay us anything

Greenstar boilers show a fault code paired with a cause code — EA with 227, for example — and it is the pair together that identifies the problem. In winter, EA 227 (no flame detected after ignition) is often nothing more than a frozen condensate pipe: thaw the outside pipe with warm — not boiling — water, then press reset once. Low system pressure will also stop the boiler; if the gauge reads below 1 bar, repressurising via the filling loop usually brings it back. If neither applies, one reset only, then stop and call us.

Worcester Bosch models we work on

Most Worcester Bosch boilers we attend in Birmingham are Greenstars: the long-running CDi combis, the current Greenstar 1000, 4000 and 8000 ranges, and the Ri heat-only models still doing service in older systems. Whatever the model, the rate is the same — £99 covers the callout, a full fault diagnosis and the first hour of labour, Mon–Fri 8am–5.30pm, with the total repair price agreed before we carry on. We hold same-day slots for no-heat and no-hot-water calls, and out of hours we quote the callout on the phone before anyone sets off.

The Worcester faults we see most

• EA 227 — no flame detected after ignition. In a cold snap this is often a frozen condensate pipe. The rest of the year the same code can point to a blocked condensate trap or ignition trouble — which is exactly why we diagnose before we replace anything.
• EA 229 — flame lit, then lost during operation. Not one to keep resetting; it needs an engineer's diagnosis.
• E9 224 — flue or high-limit thermostat activated. An overheat. The flue and fan need inspecting before the boiler should run again.
• A1 281 — pump stuck or running dry. Check the system pressure first; beyond that it is an engineer job.

Diagnosis, not guesswork

We test rather than guess: flue gas analysis, flow and return temperatures, gas rate at the meter, electrical checks across the PCB. Where a fault points to two likely parts we tell you both and tell you which we carry. And if your Greenstar is over twelve years old and the repair is more than a third of the cost of replacing it, we will say so and give you both numbers side by side. If it does come to replacement, we fit the Greenstar 1000 at £1,999 with a 5-year warranty, the Greenstar 4000 at £2,699 with a 10-year warranty and the Greenstar 8000 at £2,899 with a 10-year warranty — but repair is always priced first.

Prices are confirmed as a fixed written quote before any work starts; non-standard jobs are priced after a free site inspection. We cover Birmingham and 10 miles from B20 2JS as standard, extending to 50 miles for boiler installations. Beyond 10 miles a travel charge of £2 per mile may apply, agreed before booking.
