It means a Gas Safe registered engineer has judged the boiler unsafe to use and, with your permission, switched it off. Do not turn it back on. It needs repairing or replacing by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you can smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
A heat-only (regular) boiler heats water for the radiators and for a separate hot water cylinder, rather than heating tap water on demand like a combi. This job was like for like: a heat-only boiler replaced with a heat-only boiler.
It sits on the heating pipework and catches the black sludge (magnetite) that builds up in older systems, before it can reach the new boiler. It is emptied and cleaned at each annual service.
A cleaning chemical is run through the heating system to loosen sludge and debris, which is then flushed out, so the new boiler starts on clean system water.
