A heavy expansion vessel hanging off its pipework because the board behind it had only ever been nailed to plasterboard. Plywood, proper fixings, load spread.
In a flat in Hockley, near Birmingham city centre, the expansion vessel serving an unvented cylinder had come away from the wall and was hanging off its pipework. The wooden backboard it was screwed to had only ever been nailed into plasterboard, with no stud behind it to carry the weight. We fitted a plywood board across a much wider area of wall using high-quality, heavy-duty wall fixings, so the load is spread rather than sitting on a few nails, and remounted the vessel on it.

The customer, in a flat in Hockley near Birmingham city centre, found the red expansion vessel in the cylinder cupboard hanging off the wall. It is the vessel that serves the unvented hot water cylinder, and it is heavy, especially once it has water in it. It was being held up by nothing more than the copper pipe it connects to, which is not a job copper pipe is designed for. Left like that, the next thing to go is the joint, and then the cupboard is full of water.
The vessel had originally been screwed to a wooden backboard, which is normal. The problem was how the board was fixed to the wall. It had been nailed straight into plasterboard, and there was no stud behind it. Nails in plasterboard will hold a picture. They will not hold a pressurised vessel for long, and this one had finally pulled through. You can see the nail holes in the first photo.
Rather than put the same board back with bigger nails, we fitted a sheet of plywood across a much wider area of the wall. That does two things. It picks up more of the wall so the weight is spread over a large surface rather than concentrated on a few points, and it gives us a solid timber face to mount the vessel bracket onto. The plywood went up on high-quality, heavy-duty wall fixings rated for the load, and the vessel was remounted on it with its pipework reconnected and checked.
One visit, and the vessel is now carried by the wall rather than by a pipe.
An expansion vessel on an unvented cylinder does an important job: it takes up the expansion of the water as it heats so the pressure in the cylinder stays where it should. If the vessel is left hanging off its pipe, the strain ends up on the joint, and a joint failure on an unvented system means mains-pressure water in a cupboard. Getting the mounting right is not cosmetic.
This is also the kind of thing we look for on an unvented cylinder service. The service is about the safety devices and the vessel charge, but an engineer who is in the cupboard once a year should notice a board that is starting to pull away before it gives up.
Unvented cylinder repairs are £99 for attendance and the first hour, with materials charged on top and quoted before we fit them. The plywood and fixings for a job like this are not expensive. Water expands when it is heated. In a sealed, mains-pressure system that expansion has to go somewhere, and the vessel is where it goes: a rubber diaphragm inside it gives the water room to expand without the pressure climbing. If the vessel fails or loses its charge, the pressure relief valve starts discharging every time the cylinder heats up.
It is urgent rather than an emergency, as long as nothing is leaking. Do not try to push it back or prop it up, because that can stress the joint more. Ring us, send a photo, and in the meantime avoid loading the pipe any further. If it starts to leak, turn off the cold mains to the cylinder and call us straight away.
Not if the board was only nailed into plasterboard, which is what we found here. Putting the same fixings back means it will come down again. The proper repair is a board that spans enough wall to spread the load, fixed with heavy-duty fixings into something solid. That is what we did.
