How to check any gas engineer is genuine

Illegal gas work is the single biggest risk in this trade, and it is easy to avoid. Four steps, thirty seconds.

1. Ask for the card. Every registered engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card with their photograph on it. No card, no gas work — there is no exception to this.
2. Turn it over. The back lists the categories that engineer is qualified for, each with its own expiry date. This is the part almost nobody checks.
3. Check the number. Type the registration number into the Gas Safe Register website, or ring 0800 408 5500. Ours is 594385, listed to Synergy Gas & Plumbing Ltd, 1 Coopers Road, Birmingham B20 2JS.
4. Match the name. The card belongs to a person, and the business it is linked to should be the one you actually booked.

Our public register entry lists our LPG categories alongside the natural gas ones, so that claim is verifiable without taking our word for it.

The categories we hold

• CCN1 — core domestic natural gas safety
• CENWAT — central heating boilers and water heaters
• CPA1 — combustion performance analysis
• CKR1 — domestic gas cookers
• HTR1 — gas fires and heaters
• CoNGLP1PD and CoNGLP1RPH — LPG in permanent dwellings and residential park homes
• City & Guilds Level 2 and Level 3 — domestic natural gas installation and maintenance

One qualification that is not on the gas register, and should not be: G3 unvented hot water. That is certified by NICEIC, not Gas Safe, and we hold it separately along with water regulations, energy efficiency and heat pump certification. An engineer claiming unvented work on a gas card is a warning sign.

If you can smell gas

1. Do not touch any electrical switch, including light switches, and do not use a phone indoors.
2. Open doors and windows.
3. Turn the supply off at the meter if you can reach it safely.
4. Leave the property and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. It is free and answered 24 hours a day.
5. Once the supply has been made safe, ring us on 07413 385767 to trace and repair the fault.

That first call matters more than anything on this page. We are not a substitute for the emergency service: they isolate the supply, then we find and fix the cause.

Prices are confirmed as a fixed written quote before any work starts; non-standard jobs are priced after a free site inspection. We cover Birmingham and 10 miles from B20 2JS as standard, extending to 50 miles for boiler installations. Beyond 10 miles a travel charge of £2 per mile may apply, agreed before booking. We are not VAT registered, so no VAT is added to any price on this site.
