Power Flushing in Birmingham

A flush is only worth paying for once a heating engineer has confirmed that sludge really is the problem, rather than a failing pump or a blocked heat exchanger.

Do you actually need one?

Power flushing is oversold in this trade — our honest guide, do you actually need a power flush?, helps you check before you spend. Here are the honest signs that you do need one:

• Radiators hot at the top, cold at the bottom, across more than one room
• Black water when you bleed a radiator
• Some radiators never heat up while others are fine
• Banging, kettling or gurgling from the boiler
• Repeated pump failures or a boiler locking out on overheat
• You are fitting a new boiler onto pipework more than ten years old

And when you probably do not: one cold radiator (that is usually balancing or a stuck TRV pin), a radiator cold at the top (that is air — bleed it), or a system that a chemical clean and a new magnetic filter would sort for a third of the price. We will tell you which camp you are in.

What the process involves

A flushing machine is connected to the system and pushes water through at high volume but low pressure, reversing direction to shift debris that a normal circulation would never dislodge. Cleaning chemicals and a sludge remover go in, each radiator is isolated and worked individually, agitation is applied to stubborn ones, and the system is dumped and refilled until the water runs clear. Finally the system is dosed with corrosion inhibitor.

Allow most of a day for an average three-bed house. The system will be off during that time.

Fit a magnetic filter afterwards

A power flush cleans what is already there; a magnetic filter stops it coming back. We supply and fit one for £320, and it is the single best £320 you can spend on a heating system. Every new boiler we install includes one as standard.

Boiler warranties

Manufacturers require the system to be cleaned to BS 7593 standards when a new boiler goes in. If your old system is heavily contaminated and we install without cleaning it, your warranty claim can be refused later. This is why we sometimes insist on a flush before an installation — not as an upsell, but because the alternative is you carrying the risk.

Prices are confirmed as a fixed written quote before any work starts; non-standard jobs are priced after a free site inspection. We cover Birmingham and 10 miles from B20 2JS as standard, extending to 50 miles for boiler installations. Beyond 10 miles a travel charge of £2 per mile may apply, agreed before booking.
