A Worcester CDi in Stourbridge with no hot water and an EA fault: a faulty gas valve, replaced and safety checked
A returning customer, a boiler showing EA, and a full set of safety checks before we named the part. The gas valve was ordered, fitted and the boiler tested safe.
A customer in Stourbridge who has used us before rang with no hot water and a Worcester CDi showing an EA fault code. EA means the boiler could not prove a flame. That has several possible causes, so rather than guess we completed our safety checks on the boiler, and they traced it to a faulty gas valve. We ordered the correct valve, returned to fit it, then tested the boiler and completed all the safety checks to confirm it was operating safely. The customer was extremely happy.

The call
The call came from a customer in Stourbridge we had worked for before. Their Worcester CDi had stopped producing hot water and the display was showing EA. On a Worcester, EA is the code for a flame that could not be established or proved: the boiler tries to light, does not see a flame, and shuts down.
What we found
EA is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The same code can come from a dirty or damaged electrode, a gas supply problem, a fan or air pressure fault, a control board, or the gas valve itself. Swapping parts until it works is expensive for the customer and not how we operate, so we completed our safety checks on the boiler first. With those complete, the evidence pointed to the gas valve: the valve was not opening and delivering gas to the burner as it should when the boiler called for it.
A gas valve is specific to the boiler model, so it is not a part we can carry for every appliance. We identified the exact valve, ordered it, and booked the return visit.
The fix
On the return visit we isolated the gas and electrics, removed the old valve and fitted the new one. Then the part of the job that matters most on a gas valve: we tested the boiler and completed all the safety checks to make sure it was operating safely, including tightness testing and leak checks around the new valve and its connections, and running the boiler through its cycle to confirm it lit cleanly and stayed lit. Only then did it go back to the customer.
Hot water back, boiler running safely, and a customer who was extremely happy with the result.
A returning customer
This job matters to us for a reason beyond the repair. The customer had used us before and came back. That is the whole point of doing the diagnosis properly, giving a price before the work, and leaving the boiler safe: people trust you with the next job. A good share of our work is repeat business and recommendations, and this is what that looks like in practice.
What a repair like this costs
Our boiler repair callout is £99, which covers attendance, diagnosis and the first hour of work. Where a part has to be ordered, as here, we tell you the price of the part and the fitting before we order it, so there are no surprises on the return visit. Full details are on our boiler repair page, and if you are staring at a code on your own display, our guide to boiler fault codes explains what the common ones mean.
Common questions
What does EA mean on a Worcester boiler?
EA is Worcester's code for a flame that could not be established or proved when the boiler tried to fire. It is one of the most common codes we see, and it has several possible causes: the electrode, the gas supply, the fan, the control board or the gas valve. It needs testing, not guessing.
Can I reset an EA fault myself?
You can press reset once, and if the boiler had a one-off misfire it will run. If it comes straight back, or keeps returning, stop resetting it and get it looked at. Repeated resets of a boiler that will not prove a flame are not a fix.
Why did the gas valve have to be ordered?
Gas valves are specific to the boiler model, and we cannot carry one for every appliance on the van. We diagnose on the first visit, order the exact valve, and come back to fit it. Common service parts like electrodes and gaskets are on the van, which is why most of our repairs are finished in one visit.
What safety checks do you do after fitting a gas valve?
The new valve and its connections are tightness tested and checked for leaks, the boiler is run through its ignition and heating cycle, and its combustion is checked to confirm it is burning safely. A gas valve is a safety-critical part, and we do not hand a boiler back until those checks are complete.

A previous engineer had reported a leak on the safety check. We found it at the condensate collector, whose seals had perished. Everything came out of the combustion box to replace it, and the boiler went back together burning cleanly.
Several engineers and a shower pump had not fixed it. The gate valve on the vented cylinder had snapped inside, turning freely but barely open. A full-bore lever valve in its place, and the tenants had proper hot water pressure for the first time in over a year.
The old cylinder was leaking through the ceiling below. We quoted a replacement, the customer accepted, and a new 150-litre stainless unvented cylinder went in to current standards with the pipework insulated. G3 work, done by G3 engineers.
