Why Is My Boiler Not Working? A Birmingham Engineer's Checklist

Quick answer

Before calling an engineer, check three things: system pressure (should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar cold), whether the condensate pipe outside has frozen, and whether the thermostat has batteries and is calling for heat. These three account for a large share of the calls we get, and all are things you can safely resolve yourself.

Check 1: the pressure gauge

Find the round gauge or digital pressure reading on the boiler. Cold, it should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar. If the needle is in the red at the bottom, the boiler will shut down on a low-pressure lockout and will not fire at all.

To repressurise, find the filling loop — usually a braided silver hose or two small levers under the boiler. Open it slowly, watch the gauge climb to about 1.2 bar, then close it firmly. Reset the boiler. If pressure drops again within days, stop topping it up and call us: water is escaping somewhere, and repeated topping up drives fresh oxygen into the system and accelerates corrosion inside the boiler.

Check 2: the condensate pipe

Modern condensing boilers drain acidic water through a white plastic pipe, often run outside. In a cold snap that pipe freezes, the boiler detects the blockage and shuts down — frequently with a gurgling noise before it stops. This is the single most common winter callout in Birmingham and it is entirely self-fixable.

Pour warm — not boiling — water along the outside length of the pipe, particularly at bends and the open end. Reset the boiler. If it fires up, the fix worked. If it happens every winter, the pipe should be re-routed internally or lagged properly.

Check 3: thermostat and programmer

Dead batteries in a wireless thermostat will stop the boiler firing while everything looks perfectly normal on the boiler itself. Check the display, replace the batteries, and confirm the programmer is actually in a heating period — clocks that have not been changed for British Summer Time cause a surprising number of calls.

Faults that need an engineer

  • Ignition lockout — the boiler tries to fire, clicks repeatedly and stops. Usually the electrode, gas valve or PCB.
  • Heating but no hot water, or vice versa — normally the diverter valve.
  • Boiler fires then shuts down after a minute or two — restricted flow, a failing pump, or a heat exchanger blocked with sludge.
  • Banging or kettling — scale or debris on the heat exchanger.
  • Water leaking from the boiler — turn it off and call. Do not run it.
  • Any smell of gas — turn off at the meter, ventilate, leave and call 0800 111 999.

Common fault codes

Fault codes vary by manufacturer, but the families are consistent. Worcester Bosch EA codes point to flame detection failure. Vaillant F.22 is low water pressure and F.75 usually points to the pump or pressure sensor. Ideal F1 is low pressure, L2 is ignition. Baxi E119 is low pressure, E133 is ignition failure. Note the code down before you call — it saves diagnostic time and therefore money.

What our callout covers

£99 covers attendance, full diagnosis and the first hour of work. Once we know the fault, you get the total repair price before we go any further. If the honest answer is that your boiler is not worth repairing, we will say so and show you why.

Common questions

Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?

Water is leaving the system: a small leak on pipework or a radiator valve, a failed expansion vessel, or a pressure relief valve passing water out through the discharge pipe. Repeated topping up masks the fault and speeds up internal corrosion.

Can I fix a frozen condensate pipe myself?

Yes. Pour warm — never boiling — water along the outside pipe, especially at bends and the end, then reset the boiler. If it recurs each winter the pipe needs re-routing or proper insulation.

What pressure should my boiler be at?

Between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. It will read higher when the heating is hot, which is normal.

My radiators are cold but the boiler is on. Why?

If they are cold at the top, bleed them. Cold at the bottom points to sludge and a system that needs cleaning. All cold points to a pump, diverter valve or wiring fault.

Boiler playing up? We can usually get to you the same day.
