We repair Potterton boilers across Birmingham and the Black Country: the Promax, Titanium and Gold ranges, and the older Powermax. Potterton is part of the Baxi Heating family and uses the same style of E codes. In office hours (Mon–Fri 8am–5.30pm) the callout is £99, which covers a full diagnosis and the first hour of labour, and you get the total price before we fit anything. We carry common Potterton spares on the van. We are Gas Safe registered (594385), and every repair finishes with a flue gas analyser reading. Where a Potterton is past repair we say so: in Erdington we replaced a condemned Powermax with a new combi.
Erdington — a Potterton Powermax labelled Do Not Use, and the wall-hung combi that replaced it in the same cupboard.

Smell gas now? Do not use this form or wait for a reply. Call the National Gas Emergency Service free on 0800 111 999 (24 hours). If you are using a mobile, make the call from outside. Open doors and windows, do not switch electrics on or off, do not smoke or use naked flames, and turn the gas off at the meter if it is safe to do so, unless the meter is in a cellar or basement. Once the supply has been made safe, we can trace and repair the fault.
Potterton shows E codes on the Promax, Titanium and Gold. The code tells us where to start testing, not which part has failed. These are the ones we are asked about most.
E133, will not light. An interruption of the gas supply, an ignition failure or no flame detected. Check the gas is on and that other gas appliances work, and in freezing weather the condensate pipe outside. Otherwise the likely causes are the electrode or the gas valve, and testing tells us which.
E119, low water pressure. The pressure in the heating system has fallen below about 0.5 bar. Top up through the filling loop to between 1 and 1.5 bar with the boiler cold. If it needs topping up again and again, there is a leak or a failed part to find.
E110, overheat. The safety thermostat has operated because the heating water overheated, usually because it has stopped moving. One reset; if it will not relight or the code returns, stop and call.
E125, poor circulation. The boiler lit but the water is not circulating properly. Usually the pump, an airlock or a blockage, and often sludge behind it.
Parts that are no longer made. On older Potterton boilers some parts have been discontinued. Before we quote a repair we check the part is still available, and if it is not we tell you before you spend anything beyond the £99 diagnosis.
Potterton fault codes, briefly
The Potterton codes we are asked about most
Code
What it means
Usual causes
E133
Gas supply interrupted, ignition failure or no flame detected
Gas supply, frozen condensate pipe, electrode, gas valve
E119
Water pressure below about 0.5 bar
Leak on the system, expansion vessel, pressure relief valve
E110
Safety thermostat has operated (overheat)
Low pressure, pump, airlock, sludge
E125
Primary circulation fault
Pump, airlock, blockage
E130
Flue temperature sensor has operated
Flue system. Stop if it returns after one reset
E160
Fan fault
Fan or its wiring
Press reset once. If the code comes back, stop resetting and ring us with the code and the model. Do not keep resetting an overheat (E110) or flue (E130) fault. Our guide lists the full set of Potterton fault codes, checked against Potterton's own user and installer guides, and our Baxi boiler repair page covers Baxi and Main, which share the same family of codes.
Potterton models we work on

Told your Potterton needs replacing?
There is a point at which a boiler is not worth repairing: past twelve years old, on its second or third major part, with a corroding heat exchanger. If yours is there, we will say so and put the repair price and the replacement price side by side. A Baxi or Main Eco Compact combi swap is £1,999 with a five-year warranty, and a Baxi 600 is £2,199 with seven years, both confirmed in writing after a free survey.
Some are past repair. In Erdington in October 2026 a landlord's Potterton Powermax had been condemned and labelled Do Not Use, leaving the tenant without heating or hot water. The Powermax is a tall floor-standing unit with a hot water store built in underneath, and it filled the cupboard. We took it out and fitted a wall-hung Baxi 400 combi with a magnetic filter and scale reducer, with the new flue properly supported, and the tenant got most of the cupboard back.
Servicing a Potterton
An older boiler earns its annual service more than a new one. A basic service is £95 and includes a combustion check on the analyser; an intermediate service is £125 and a full strip-down is £185 with gaskets and an inhibitor top-up included. On an older Potterton the service is also when we can tell you honestly how much life it has left and which parts are still obtainable.
Potterton jobs we have written up
One so far, written up with the photos our engineers took. More are added as we do them.
The Powermax had been labelled Do Not Use, so the landlord asked us to quote. Out came the floor-standing boiler and hot water store; in went a wall-hung Baxi combi with a Sentinel filter and scale reducer, the system flushed and the vertical flue properly supported.

What does E133 mean on a Potterton boiler?
E133 means the gas supply was interrupted, the boiler failed to ignite or no flame was detected. Check the gas is on and that other gas appliances work. In freezing weather, thaw the white plastic condensate pipe outside with warm, not boiling, water, then reset once. If the code comes back, the cause is likely to be the electrode or the gas valve, and that is work for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What does E119 mean on a Potterton boiler?
E119 means the water pressure in the heating system has fallen below about 0.5 bar. With the boiler cold, top up through the filling loop until the gauge reads between 1 and 1.5 bar, then close the loop. If it needs topping up repeatedly there is a leak or a failed part to find.
Are Potterton and Baxi the same?
Potterton is part of the Baxi Heating family, and its boilers use the same style of E codes as Baxi and Main. We repair all three, and our Baxi boiler repair page covers Baxi and Main in more detail.
Are you Potterton approved?
No, and we would rather say so. We are Gas Safe registered (594385) and members of Baxi Works, the installer scheme of the Baxi family that Potterton belongs to, which is a loyalty scheme and not an approval. For repairs we work as independent engineers: we test before replacing anything, and we will tell you when a repair is not worth doing.
Should I repair or replace an old Potterton?
Repair it unless it is past about twelve years old, on its second or third major part, its heat exchanger is corroding or the part it needs is no longer made. We check first and show you what we find. If it is time, a Baxi or Main Eco Compact combi swap is £1,999 with a five-year warranty, confirmed in writing after a free survey.
