Ideal Boiler Repair, Birmingham

Independent Gas Safe registered engineers. Ideal Logic and Vogue faults tested, not guessed: L2 lockouts, F1 low pressure, F2 flame loss and boilers that keep losing pressure.

Quick answer

We repair Ideal boilers across Birmingham and the surrounding towns: the Logic, Logic+ and Logic Max in combi, system and heat-only form, and the Vogue. In office hours (Mon–Fri 8am–5.30pm) the callout is £99, which covers a full diagnosis and the first hour of labour, and you get the total price before we fit anything. We carry common Ideal spares on the van. We are independent of Ideal and Gas Safe registered (594385). Every repair finishes with a flue gas analyser reading, which on one Ideal Logic showed that an L2 lockout was hiding a dangerous carbon monoxide reading.

Ideal faults and what usually causes them

The Logic family shows F and L codes; the Vogue shows the fault in words. The code tells us where to start testing, not which part has failed. These are the ones we are asked about most.

  • L2, ignition lockout. The boiler tried to light, failed and has locked itself out. In freezing weather, check the condensate pipe outside first. Otherwise the cause is the gas supply, the electrode, the gas valve or the burner, and it has to be proved on the analyser. On one Ideal Logic, an L2 lockout turned out to be hiding dangerous carbon monoxide readings. We made the boiler safe, replaced the gas valve and injector and recommissioned it. That is why we do not treat L2 as a reset-and-go fault.
  • F1, low water pressure. Top up through the filling loop to between 1 and 1.5 bar. If the pressure keeps dropping and there is no leak you can see, the leak may be inside the boiler. On an Ideal Logic that kept losing pressure with no visible leak, we traced it to the main heat exchanger leaking internally.
  • F2, flame loss. The burner lit and the flame was then lost. That points to the gas supply, the flue, the electrode or the condensate. Some Logic boilers show this as Fn or Ln, depending on the control board fitted.
  • L9 or F9, control board. On Logic combis these codes point to a control board that is faulty or has not been configured. On Logic Max heat-only boilers the same codes are used for a different fault, so we ask for the exact model before anyone prices a board.
  • LC, too many resets. The boiler has been reset five times in fifteen minutes and will not accept another. Some models show L5 instead. It is not a new fault: a real fault is being reset, and it needs finding.

Ideal fault codes, briefly

The Ideal codes we are asked about most
CodeWhat it meansUsual causes
F1System water pressure too lowLeak on the system, expansion vessel, pressure relief valve, internal leak
L2Ignition lockoutFrozen condensate pipe, gas supply, electrode, gas valve
F2Flame loss during operationGas supply, flue, electrode, condensate
F3Fan faultFan or its wiring
L1Overheat, or no water flowLow pressure, pump, airlock, sludge
L9 / F9Control board fault (meaning varies by model)Board configuration, the board itself, gas valve
LCFive resets within 15 minutesAn underlying fault being reset

Press reset once. If the code comes back, stop resetting and ring us with the code and the model. The Vogue shows words rather than codes, such as "Ignition Lockout" or "Low Mains Voltage", and they mean what they say. Our guide lists the full set of Ideal fault codes, including the ones that differ between the combi and heat-only models, checked against Ideal's own manuals.

Ideal models we work on

The Logic, Logic+ and Logic Max as combi, system and heat-only boilers, and the Vogue. Ideal changes what some codes mean between models and control boards, so when you call, have the model name and the code on the display. A photo sent by WhatsApp does the same job.

Repair or replace an Ideal?

There is a point at which a boiler is not worth repairing: past twelve years old, on its second or third major part, with a corroding heat exchanger. If yours is there, we will say so and put the repair price and the replacement price side by side. New boilers start at £1,999 fitted, confirmed in writing after a free survey.

The main heat exchanger is the test case. In Willenhall in March 2026 an Ideal Logic was losing pressure regularly, and we traced it to the main heat exchanger leaking internally, one of the most expensive parts inside a boiler. That customer chose a new boiler with a ten-year warranty rather than pay for a major repair; the job is on our Wolverhampton page. Sometimes the repair is worth doing, and sometimes the warranty on a new boiler wins. Our job is to set out both prices so the decision is yours.

Servicing an Ideal

Ideal, like every manufacturer, ties its guarantee to an annual service. A basic service is £95 and includes a combustion check on the analyser; an intermediate service is £125. A full strip-down, £185 with gaskets and an inhibitor top-up included, is the right service when the combustion readings or the condition of the heat exchanger call for it, and we check both at every visit.

What a fouled heat exchanger does to a boiler is easiest to see on a job we photographed, on a different make. A Vokera we serviced read over 999 ppm of carbon monoxide at the start of the visit and 112 ppm after a full strip-down.

Ideal jobs we have attended

We have not yet published a full photo case study of an Ideal repair, and we are not going to borrow one. The Ideal jobs described on this page are the L2 lockout that was hiding carbon monoxide, listed on our boiler repair page, and the Willenhall Logic on our Wolverhampton page. Full write-ups with photos are on the case studies index as we add them.

We also repair Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi and Glow-worm boilers. Every other make is covered on our main boiler repair page.

Ideal boiler repair: common questions

How much does an Ideal boiler repair cost?

In office hours (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5.30pm), £99 covers the callout, a full diagnosis and the first hour of labour. Once we know the fault you get the total price, including any part, before we carry on. Out of hours, we quote by phone before we set off.

What does L2 mean on an Ideal boiler?

L2 is an ignition lockout: the boiler tried to light, failed and has shut itself down. In freezing weather, check the white plastic condensate pipe outside and thaw it with warm, not boiling, water, then reset once. If L2 comes back, stop resetting. The cause can be the gas supply, the electrode or the gas valve, and it needs proving on a flue gas analyser by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What does F1 mean on an Ideal Logic?

F1 means the water pressure in the heating system is too low. Top up through the filling loop until the gauge reads between 1 and 1.5 bar. If the pressure keeps falling there is a leak to find, and on an Ideal Logic with no visible leak it can be inside the boiler, on the main heat exchanger.

What does L9 mean on an Ideal boiler?

On Logic combi boilers, L9 or F9 points to a control board that is faulty or has not been configured. On Logic Max heat-only boilers the same code is used for a different fault, so the exact model matters. It is not a code to keep resetting: ring us with the code and the model name.

Are you Ideal approved?

No, and we would rather tell you than let you assume. We are independent Gas Safe registered engineers (594385) who repair Ideal boilers and carry their common spares. We belong to the Vaillant and Baxi installer schemes, which are loyalty schemes and not approvals either. For a repair, what matters is a proper diagnosis and the right part.

How often should an Ideal boiler be serviced?

Every year, which is also a condition of Ideal's guarantee. A basic service is £95 and includes a combustion check on the analyser. A full strip-down, £185 with gaskets and an inhibitor top-up included, is done when the combustion readings or the condition of the heat exchanger call for it, not automatically.
