Glow-worm Boiler Repair, Birmingham
Independent Gas Safe registered engineers. Glow-worm Energy, Ultracom, Flexicom and Betacom faults tested, not guessed: F22, F28, F29 and F75, and no hot water.
We repair Glow-worm boilers across Birmingham and the surrounding towns: the Energy, Easicom, Ultracom, Flexicom and Betacom ranges, and older heat-only models. Glow-worm is part of the Vaillant Group, and its newer boilers use the same style of F codes. In office hours (Mon–Fri 8am–5.30pm) the callout is £99, which covers a full diagnosis and the first hour of labour, and you get the total price before we fit anything. We carry common Glow-worm spares on the van. We are independent of Glow-worm and Gas Safe registered (594385), and every repair finishes with a flue gas analyser reading.
Chelmsley Wood — a Glow-worm capped off for carbon monoxide at a landlord inspection, then repaired with a new flue collector and gaskets.

Smell gas now? Do not use this form or wait for a reply. Call the National Gas Emergency Service free on 0800 111 999 (24 hours). If you are using a mobile, make the call from outside. Open doors and windows, do not switch electrics on or off, do not smoke or use naked flames, and turn the gas off at the meter if it is safe to do so, unless the meter is in a cellar or basement. Once the supply has been made safe, we can trace and repair the fault.
Glow-worm fault codes vary more between its own ranges than on most makes, so treat any table as a starting point and check the label inside the flap of your boiler. These are the faults we are asked about most.
F22, low water pressure. Top up through the filling loop to between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it drops again within days, there is a leak on the system, a failed expansion vessel or a weeping pressure relief valve to find.
F28, will not light. An ignition fault, and in a cold snap very often a frozen condensate pipe outside. Thaw it with warm, not boiling, water and reset once. If it returns, it is the gas supply, the electrode or the gas valve.
F29, lights then goes out. The flame was established and then lost while the boiler was running. One for an engineer with an analyser.
F75, pressure sensor. The boiler does not see the pressure rise it expects when the pump starts. The cause is the pressure sensor, the pump or low water pressure, often with sludge behind it. It is a fault we have repaired on Glow-worm boilers.
A flashing light and no code. Betacom models do not show a code at all, only a coloured light. Tell us the colour and whether it is steady or flashing.
Carbon monoxide found at a safety check. At a landlord inspection in Chelmsley Wood we found rust at the back of the heat exchanger on a Glow-worm heat-only boiler and a carbon monoxide reading on the analyser. We capped the boiler off, told the tenant and the landlord, then replaced the cracked flue collector and its gaskets and retested.
Glow-worm fault codes, briefly
The Glow-worm codes we are asked about most
Code
What it means
Usual causes
F22
System water pressure too low
Leak on the system, expansion vessel, pressure relief valve
F28
Ignition fault
Frozen condensate pipe, gas supply, electrode, gas valve
F29
Flame lost during operation
Gas supply, flue, electrode, condensate
F75
No pressure rise seen when the pump starts
Pressure sensor, pump, low pressure, sludge
F27
Flame signal detected when there should be none
Gas valve or electronics. Do not reset
F61 / F62
Gas valve control fault
Gas valve, its wiring or the control board. Do not reset
Press reset once. If the code comes back, stop resetting and ring us with the code and the model. With F27, F61 or F62 do not reset at all: switch the boiler off and call, and if you can smell gas ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first. Our guide lists the full set of Glow-worm fault codes and says which ranges each one applies to, checked against Glow-worm's own manuals.
Glow-worm models we work on
The Energy and Energy7, Easicom, Ultracom, Flexicom and Betacom, and older heat-only Glow-worm boilers. Because the codes differ between ranges, the model name matters more on a Glow-worm than on most makes. When you call, have the model and the code or light on the display, or send a photo by WhatsApp.
Told your Glow-worm needs replacing?
A boiler that has been switched off or capped as unsafe is not automatically finished. Whether it is worth repairing depends on the actual fault, whether the part is still available, what the repair costs against a replacement, and how long you plan to stay. The Chelmsley Wood Glow-worm was capped off for carbon monoxide and was back in service with a new flue collector and gaskets.
There is a point at which a boiler is not worth repairing: past twelve years old, on its second or third major part, with a corroding heat exchanger. If yours is there, we will say so and put the repair price and the replacement price side by side. New boilers start at £1,999 fitted, confirmed in writing after a free survey.
Servicing a Glow-worm
A basic service is £95 and includes a combustion check on the analyser; an intermediate service is £125 and a full strip-down is £185 with gaskets and an inhibitor top-up included. The Chelmsley Wood fault was found because the boiler was opened and tested, not just looked at. For landlords, a gas safety certificate (CP12) is £90 for a boiler and cooker, and a service can be added on the same visit.

Rust at the back of the heat exchanger and a carbon monoxide reading on the analyser, in a house with a young family. We capped the boiler off, told the tenant and landlord, and replaced the cracked flue collector and gaskets with the landlord's permission.

What does F75 mean on a Glow-worm boiler?
F75 means the boiler did not see the pressure rise it expects when the pump starts. The cause is the pressure sensor, the pump or low water pressure, often with sludge behind it. Check the gauge reads between 1 and 1.5 bar and reset once. If the code returns, ring us with the code and the model.
What does F28 mean on a Glow-worm boiler?
F28 is an ignition fault: the boiler tried to light and could not. In freezing weather it is very often a frozen condensate pipe. Thaw the white plastic pipe outside with warm, not boiling, water and reset once. If it comes back, the cause is likely to be the gas supply, the electrode or the gas valve, and that is work for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
My Glow-worm shows a flashing light but no code. What does it mean?
Betacom models do not display fault codes, only a coloured light. The meaning depends on the colour and whether it is steady or flashing, and it is listed on the label inside the boiler's flap. Tell us what you can see when you call, or send a photo.
Are you Glow-worm approved?
No, and we would rather tell you than let you assume. We are independent Gas Safe registered engineers (594385) who repair Glow-worm boilers and carry their common spares. We belong to the Vaillant and Baxi installer schemes, which are loyalty schemes and not approvals either. For a repair, what matters is a proper diagnosis and the right part.
Is a Glow-worm that has been capped off worth repairing?
Often, yes. It depends on the fault, whether the part is still available and what the repair costs against a replacement. A Glow-worm we capped off for carbon monoxide in Chelmsley Wood was back in service with a new flue collector and gaskets. We give you the repair price and the replacement price and let you decide.
