Try these two things before you call

Roughly one call in six is something you can fix in two minutes, and we would rather tell you that than charge you £99 for it.

• Check the pressure gauge. If the needle is below 1 bar the boiler will lock out. Topping up via the filling loop usually brings it straight back.
• Check the condensate pipe. In a cold snap the white plastic pipe running outside can freeze and shut the boiler down. A jug of warm — not boiling — water poured along it often clears it.

If neither works, or you can smell gas, stop and call us.

Faults we see most across the West Midlands

• Pressure dropping every few days — a leak on the system, a failed expansion vessel, or a weeping pressure relief valve.
• Heating works, hot water does not — usually the diverter valve or its actuator.
• Boiler fires then cuts out — blocked heat exchanger, failed pump, or a sludged system starving flow.
• Ignition lockout — spark electrode, gas valve or a PCB fault.
• Radiators cold at the bottom — magnetite build-up, which is a system problem rather than a boiler one.
• Banging or kettling — scale on the heat exchanger, common in Birmingham's harder water pockets.

Getting the diagnosis right first time

Over twenty years the pattern is consistent: most repeat visits come from someone swapping a part on a guess. We test rather than guess — flue gas analysis, flow and return temperatures, gas rate at the meter, electrical checks across the PCB. It takes longer on the first visit and saves you a second one.

Where the fault points to two likely parts, we will tell you both, tell you which we carry on the van, and tell you honestly what a fair repair bill looks like against the cost of replacing the boiler. If your boiler is over twelve years old and the repair is over £600, we will say so.

We carry common spares for Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal, Glow-worm and Potterton. Parts we fit are covered by a 12-month parts-only warranty.

When to stop repairing

A boiler past twelve years old, on its second or third major part, with a heat exchanger showing corrosion, is money going the wrong way. We will give you the repair price and the replacement price side by side and let you decide. We do not use scare tactics, and an engineer who condemns your boiler without showing you the reading is one to be wary of.

Recent repairs

A Baxi in Erdington showing E133 was diagnosed and repaired within the hour — a failed electrode, carried on the van, fitted and tested on the spot.

An Ideal Logic that kept losing pressure with no visible leak: the leak was internal, on the main heat exchanger. Correct replacement ordered, fitted, and the boiler left holding pressure.

An Ideal Logic L2 lockout that combustion testing showed was hiding dangerous CO readings — we made the appliance safe, replaced the gas valve and injector, and fully recommissioned it. A reminder of why every repair here ends with an analyser, not a guess.

A Worcester Greenstar Ri in Walsall stuck in ignition lockout, where previous engineers had told the customer to replace the boiler. The cause was a perished burner gasket and a damaged electrode, both van stock, both fitted and tested on the first visit. See the photos and the full write-up.

An online booking in Quinton for a Worcester Greenstar Compact CDi whose control panel was held up with duct tape and a bit of copper pipe. A snapped hinge clip, a common fault on that model and one we carry on the van. Both clips replaced on the spot, and a customer reassured they did not need a new boiler. See the before and after.

A Worcester CDi in a Stourbridge rental, with a leak flagged on the gas safety check by another engineer.
